Whittaker, William L.

Dr. William L. "Red" Whittaker is the Founders University Research Professor in the Field Robotics Center at Carnegie Mellon. He received his Ph.D. from CMU in 1979. His first major project in the area of field robotics came with the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, when Whittaker created three robots to investigate the aftermath of the reactor meltdown. Whittaker has been involved in a number of major robotics projects at CMU, including Terregator, Navlab, Ambler, and later the early DARPA Robotics Challenges. He is also the founder of the National Robotics Engineering Center, or NREC.
