Navigation Laboratory (Robot)
The Navigation Laboratory, or Navlab, is one of CMU's longest-running projects. One of the earliest autonomous vehicle projects, there have to date been eleven different vehicles tested under the project, including HUMVEEs, transit buses, and regular automobiles like Pontiac sedans. The first of these projects, Navlab 1, was an electric blue modified Chevy box truck, complete with four computer work stations where rear seats should be and an early LIDAR sensor on the roof. Navlab 1 was created for testing computer vision and road following, and was often tested on Flagstaff Hill and Schenley Park. Navlab 2 and 4 were both modified HMMWVs, Navlab 3 was a Honda Accord owned by a member of the research team, Navlab 5 was a Pontiac Trans Sport minivan sponsored by Delco Electronics, Navlab 6 and 7 were both Pontiac Bonnevilles, Navlab 8 was an Oldsmobile Silhouette van, Navlab 9 and 10 were transit buses, and Navlab 11 is a Jeep Wrangler.
