Dante (Robot)
Dante I was a walking robot designed for rough terrain exploration, locomotion, navigation, and the ability to be self-sustaining. It was a tethered robot, using a tension cable to ascend and descend steep slopes. Dante was taken to the active volcano Mt. Erebus in Antarctica to attempt to reach an interior magma lake for study, although it did not succeed in this task. It was later cannibalized to create Dante II.
